Where should I place a whatnot?

These tiered shelves suit corners or empty wall spaces in living rooms and hallways. Their open design allows them to hold displays without blocking light. Freestanding models function well away from walls when the timber grain is finished on all sides. Corner units fit snugly into tight angles to maximise room layouts.

How many tiers do they have?

Tier counts vary from three-tier hanging or table models up to six-tier floor-standing units. Taller selections provide substantial vertical display capacity. Lower three-tier versions function effectively as bedside tables or corner stands. Tighter intervals between shelves suit small ceramics while taller gaps accommodate books.

What wood types are used?

Nineteenth-century makers primarily worked with dark hardwoods including walnut, rosewood, and mahogany. Burr walnut veneers appear on higher-end decorative surfaces. Alternative materials include padouk and teak within specific regional interpretations. Brass accents and wood inlay occasionally provide contrasting detail on shelf edges.

Can they hold heavy books?

Most multi-tier stands suit lighter items such as ceramics, glassware, and small display volumes. The open frame construction is designed primarily for decorative display. Heavier folios sit more securely on the lowest solid tier rather than upper shelves. Wall-mounted hanging variants require secure fixings appropriate to the wall structure.
