What is a turned spindle carver chair?

A turned spindle carver chair is a wooden armchair featuring turned upright spindles in the backrest and supportive arms for everyday seating. These chairs developed through regional country traditions, utilising local hardwoods and simple joinery to create durable domestic furniture.

How do I date an old spindle chair?

Dating relies on examining timber species, tool marks, construction methods, and overall wear patterns across the frame. Earlier pieces from the Georgian period often display hand-turned details and deep-dish elm seats, while later Victorian versions incorporate factory-assisted lathe turning.

Were these chairs used in dining rooms?

These armchairs served multiple domestic purposes in farmhouses, kitchens, and informal dining spaces rather than formal parlours. Their sturdy construction made them suitable for daily household tasks and prolonged sitting around farmhouse tables.

How do I care for a rush seat?

Rush seats require dry indoor conditions and gentle dusting to preserve the natural plant fibres over decades of use. Avoiding excessive moisture and weight concentration prevents the woven marsh grass from snapping or sagging prematurely.
