What is a triptych mirror vanity?

A triptych mirror vanity is a dressing table or vanity mirror featuring three hinged glass panels. The movable side wings allow you to adjust the angles for grooming. These pieces range from freestanding tabletop mirrors to large dressing chests and complete bedroom suites dating from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

How do I clean the mirror glass?

Clean the glass using a soft cloth and a mild glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth rather than directly onto the mirror. This prevents moisture from seeping behind the silvered backing or into the wooden frame. Take care around the hinges and joints of antique brass frames to avoid leaving damp residue that might cause tarnishing.

Are the side mirrors adjustable?

Yes, the side panels are fitted with brass hinges that allow them to swing inward and outward. This adjustability is the defining feature of a triptych design. When positioning the glass, check that the hinges move freely without straining the wood screws fixed into the frame or dressing table base.

How do I identify the period?

Period identification relies on a combination of wood types, hardware, and stylistic details. Pieces from the Edwardian era and the nineteen-twenties often showcase Art Deco geometry or revived historical styles like Queen Anne and French Rococo. Examine the construction methods, drawer linings, and screw types on the back of the mirrors to understand the manufacturing era.
