How do I identify a Windsor chair?

Windsor chairs are characterised by a solid wooden seat that acts as the central anchor for all other components. The legs and back spindles fit directly into drilled holes within this thick slab of timber. Traditional examples feature steam-bent wooden bows forming the backrest, often supported by additional armpieces and central splats depending on whether they are low back or high back variants.

Are these chairs suitable for daily dining use?

Many traditional wooden chairs were originally engineered for heavy domestic service in farmhouses and kitchens, making them inherently robust for contemporary dining rooms. Solid timber construction and sturdy stretcher systems provide the structural support necessary for regular sitting. Buyers should inspect the rigidity of the joints and the condition of the wooden seat before daily deployment to ensure the centuries-old timber remains stable.

How should I care for antique wooden seating?

Maintaining antique wooden chairs requires regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional treatment with traditional beeswax to nourish the dry timber. Avoid placing these pieces near direct heat sources or in fluctuating humidity to prevent the wood from splitting. Gentle maintenance preserves the original surface finish and allows the natural patination to continue developing safely.
