How do I use a cabinet in a modern room?

These cabinets adapt easily to contemporary living by providing concealed storage for modern electronics, kitchenware, or linens. Their natural timber tones and aged surfaces add texture and contrast to minimalist interiors. Positioning a large armoire in a bedroom or placing a small bedside cabinet beside a contemporary bed introduces historical depth without sacrificing daily utility.

What is the difference between provincial and revival styles?

Provincial pieces originate from regional workshops and prioritise sturdy utility, straightforward timber construction, and local vernacular details. They reflect the practical needs of rural households rather than courtly fashions. Revival styles draw inspiration from earlier historical periods, incorporating more elaborate decorative carving, symmetrical proportions, and formal architectural references.

How should I care for antique wood surfaces?

Maintaining antique timber requires consistent dusting with a soft, dry cloth and the occasional application of traditional beeswax to nourish the grain. Avoid placing wooden furniture near direct heat sources or in damp cellars to prevent warping. Protecting marble tops from acidic spills ensures the stone maintains its polished appearance over decades of everyday use.

How can I tell the age of a cabinet?

Examining the construction methods, tool marks, and hardware provides clear clues to a piece's age. Hand-cut joinery and forged iron hinges typically point to eighteenth or nineteenth-century origins. The natural patina of the wood, combined with regional stylistic markers like carved panelling, helps position the furniture within specific historical periods.
