How were these trunks used originally?

These trunks served as secure luggage and portable wardrobes for military officers, diplomats, and merchants travelling across the British Empire. They held uniforms, documents, and personal valuables safely within ships and carriages. Over time, many functioned as domestic storage, marriage dowry holders, or merchant ledger repositories. Their rugged construction allowed them to endure decades of harsh transit conditions.

Where were teak brass trunks made?

Production occurred across various colonial outposts, including India, Burma, East Africa, and Dutch colonial settlements in Southeast Asia. Local craftsmen built them using regional teak timber and imported or locally cast metalwork. Some pieces were also assembled in Britain for military outfitters using imported tropical hardwoods. The distinct styles often reflect the specific trade routes and regional workshops of their origin.

How do I care for teak and brass?

Maintain the timber by applying a neutral wax periodically to keep the grain nourished and prevent drying out. Avoid placing the trunk near direct heat sources or strong sunlight. Polish the brass mounts sparingly with a soft cloth to manage tarnish without stripping the historical patina. Regular dusting with a dry cloth keeps the surface secure.
