How do drop-leaf tables work?

Drop-leaf tables feature a fixed central top with hinged flaps on either side that lift up for dining. Swing legs or brackets pull out from beneath to support the extended leaves. When the meal is finished, the supports fold inward and the leaves drop down to save floor space.

What is a gateleg table?

A gateleg table is a form where one or more legs swing outward on a hinge like a gate to support a folding leaf. This configuration provides sturdy structural support underneath extended flaps. When closed, the swing legs fold back flush against the main frame.

How do I seat four people at a small table?

Compact dining tables often use drop leaves or folding actions to expand when guests arrive. Selecting an oval or rectangular gateleg format allows knee room at each end once the flaps are raised. Matching the table width to suitable dining chairs ensures comfortable seating.

Are these tables suitable for daily use?

Solid timber construction in oak and mahogany makes these folding tables robust enough for regular dining. The pivoting joints and hinges are built to withstand frequent opening and closing. Routine care keeps the timber surfaces and folding mechanisms functioning smoothly.
