What is a silver visiting card holder?

A silver visiting card holder is a small pocket case used during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to store paper calling cards. These items allowed individuals to present their names formally when arriving at a residence. Today, they survive as collectible examples of period silversmithing, featuring diverse materials such as sterling silver, mother-of-pearl, and tortoiseshell.

How were these card cases used?

Victorian and Edwardian society members carried these cases in pockets or reticules to social calls and receptions. The rigid silver protected the delicate paper calling cards from bending or damage while travelling. Upon arrival, the owner extracted a card to present to the household staff as an announcement of their visit.

How do I tell Victorian and Edwardian pieces apart?

Victorian pieces frequently display deep castle top architectural casting, heavy scrollwork engraving, and makers associated with the mid to late nineteenth century. These often reflect Gothic Revival or ornate floral styles. Edwardian pieces tend toward lighter constructions, sometimes incorporating novelty mechanisms, cleaner geometric lines, or animal motifs such as stags and dogs.

What are castle top card cases?

Castle top card cases feature high-relief sculptural lids depicting well-known British or American architectural landmarks. Examples include depictions of Windsor Castle, Trinity Church, and St Paul’s Cathedral. These pieces represent some of the most sought-after work by prominent silversmiths of the nineteenth century.

Can I store modern cards inside them?

Most antique visiting card holders were built for smaller nineteenth-century calling cards rather than modern business cards. Standard contemporary cards are usually too wide or thick to fit comfortably inside the rigid metal frames. Collectors generally display them as decorative objects or store slim paper items inside.
