What fits inside a sovereign holder?

These cases were manufactured specifically to hold British gold sovereign and half-sovereign coins used during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Some combination pieces also accommodate postage stamps, matches, toothpicks or pocket pencils alongside the main coin slots.

How do double sovereign cases work?

Double versions feature two internal spring-loaded clips or sleeves that secure one gold coin on each side of a central divider. The user presses the thumbpiece to release the spring catch, allowing the hinged cover to pop open for coin removal.

Were these worn on watch chains?

Many examples include an integrated suspension loop designed to attach directly to a pocket watch albert chain worn across the waistcoat. This kept the heavy silver case secure and accessible while moving about town.

How are the manufacturing dates verified?

British pieces carry hallmarks stamped into the metal, featuring a date letter corresponding to the assay year and an anchor, leopard head or other town symbol. These official stamps identify the exact year and location where the silver was tested.
