How do I clean an antique silver sauce jug?

Use a specialised silver polish and a soft cloth to remove tarnish gently without pressing too hard on raised details or hallmarks. Avoid abrasive materials that can wear down thin plating or scratch solid metal. Rinse the vessel thoroughly in warm water and dry it immediately with a lint-free cloth to prevent water spots from forming on the surface.

Can I use these jugs for hot gravy?

Solid silver and plated vessels conduct heat quickly, so handle them with care when containing hot liquids fresh from the stove or kitchen. Most period pieces were built precisely for this daily dining purpose. Ensure you warm the vessel gently beforehand if pouring very hot sauce to prevent sudden temperature shock, particularly with glass-lined or older plated items.

What is the difference between a sauce boat and a cream jug?

Sauce boats generally feature a wider, more elongated body with an extended pouring lip designed to distribute savory liquids and gravies smoothly. Cream jugs are usually taller and narrower, intended for pouring milk or cream into tea or coffee. Many antique forms overlap in design, meaning smaller sauce vessels often double effectively as creamers on a modern table.

How do I identify the date of a silver jug?

Look closely for stamped hallmarks on the rim, base or underside of the piece, which typically include a date letter indicating the exact year of assay. Consulting standard assay office tables will then reveal when the workshop submitted the item. If the piece is silver plated rather than solid metal, dating relies more on style, form, retailer marks and manufacturing technique rather than official date letters.
