What is the difference between a goblet and a chalice?

A goblet is a secular drinking vessel generally used for wine or festive toasts at the table. A chalice is specifically consecrated for religious services and communion. While their basic vase-shaped forms appear similar, chalices frequently feature wider bases and interior gilding designed for sacramental use.

How do I clean antique silver cups?

Historic silver requires gentle cleaning with specialised non-abrasive polishes and soft cloths. Avoid harsh chemical dips that strip the natural patina accumulated over decades. Preserving the subtle depth of hand-engraved details and maker marks ensures the historical integrity of the piece remains intact.

Are silver presentation cups engraved?

Many historical presentation and trophy cups feature dedication inscriptions, family crests, or military badges recording the original recipient. These contemporary engravings help historians date the piece and trace its provenance. Unengraved examples also exist, offering a blank surface that indicates they were kept ready for stock or personal purchase.

What does Old Sheffield Plate mean?

Old Sheffield Plate is an early fusing technique where a sheet of silver is melted onto a copper core before being rolled into sheets. This produces a durable material where the copper may occasionally show softly at the exposed edges. It differs entirely from nineteenth-century electroplate, possessing a warmer, distinct appearance valued by collectors of early barware.
