How do I clean the inside of an old perfume bottle?

Resin and dried perfume residue often coat the interior of antique scent bottles over decades of storage. Fill the vessel with warm water and mild detergent, avoiding harsh abrasives that might scratch the interior glass walls.

Are sterling silver hallmarks important on these bottles?

Hallmarks stamped onto the silver collar or lid provide precise clues regarding the date and manufacturing location. British marks indicate the assay office and year of production, while continental pieces often feature standard export marks.

What is the difference between a scent bottle and a cologne bottle?

Scent bottles generally feature tight stoppers designed for concentrated perfume oils and travel use. Cologne bottles are typically larger vessels intended for daily dressing table use and refreshing splashes.

How can I tell Victorian glass from later reproductions?

Victorian glass exhibits hand-finished pontil marks on the base and variations in colour saturation unique to period manufacturing methods. Examine the metal mounts for period-appropriate wear patterns and genuine hallmarks rather than modern laser stampings.
