What is a shodana cabinet?

A shodana is a multi-tiered display cabinet with staggered shelves and small compartments designed for showing small decorative objects. These pieces combine traditional Chinese hardwood construction with influences from Japanese display furniture popular during the late nineteenth century.

How are hongmu and rosewood different?

Hongmu is a specific category of dense, fragrant hardwood used in traditional Chinese furniture, while rosewood is a broader botanical term for heavy reddish timber. Both materials share exceptional durability and dark natural tones that suit intricate hand carving and polished finishes.

Were these cabinets made for export?

Many surviving pieces date from periods of active international trade and reflect aesthetic choices tailored for Western homes. Chinese export workshops combined traditional forms like display stands and table cabinets with stylistic elements that appealed to European collectors.

How should I clean a rosewood cabinet?

Maintenance requires gentle dusting with a dry microfibre cloth to protect the polished hardwood and delicate inlay work. Avoid liquid cleaners or commercial polishes that might damage mother of pearl elements or penetrate the historic wood finish.
