How do I hang a heavy giltwood mirror safely?

Heavy carved wood and gesso frames require robust fixings attached directly to wall studs or masonry using appropriate wall anchors. Distributing the weight across heavy-duty brackets ensures the piece remains secure. Professional mirror hangers often utilise French cleats to support wide frames evenly and prevent any forward tilt.

What is the difference between rococo and baroque wall pieces?

Baroque designs tend to be heavier, more symmetrical, and monumental in scale, focusing on grand architectural power. Rococo style items introduce lighter, highly asymmetrical curves, playful scrollwork, and naturalistic shell motifs. While both styles utilise extensive gilding, rococo compositions feel more fluid and whimsical.

How should I clean a gilded antique frame?

Dust gilded wooden frames gently with a soft, dry brush to prevent abrasive particles from scratching the delicate gold leaf. Avoid liquid cleaners, water, or chemical solvents, which can lift the gesso and flake the metallic surface. Professional conservation is recommended for deep cleaning or repairing damaged gilding.

Are textile wall hangings sensitive to sunlight?

Woven wool and cotton tapestries are vulnerable to fading and fibre degradation when exposed to direct sunlight over extended periods. Hanging textile pieces on interior walls away from direct windows preserves their original colours. Rotating panels periodically helps maintain even exposure across the fabric.
