What were repousse trinket boxes used for?

These containers served practical domestic functions on dressing tables, desks, and sideboards. They held small personal items such as rings, pins, vanity accessories, and tobacco or snuff. Their decorative exterior designs also made them display pieces suited for parlours and drawing rooms during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

How do I date a silver trinket box?

Dating relies primarily on hallmarks stamped into the metal, which indicate the assay office, the specific year letter, and the maker's mark. Stylistic clues such as Victorian floral motifs or Edwardian proportions help narrow the period. Examining the construction methods and hinge types provides further confirmation of the manufacturing era.

What is the difference between solid silver and silver gilt?

Solid silver refers to objects constructed entirely from silver alloy, such as British sterling silver. Silver gilt describes the same silver base metal with a thin layer of gold applied to the surface. Gold plating was frequently used on the interiors of boxes to protect the silver from corrosive substances like snuff.

How should I clean an antique silver box?

Cleaning requires minimal intervention to preserve the original patina and the fine details of the repoussé work. Gentle dusting with a soft cloth is usually sufficient for regular maintenance. Harsh chemical dips or abrasive polishes should be avoided because they strip away the subtle dark oxidation in the recessed areas that defines the design.
