What is a regency pot cupboard?

A regency pot cupboard is a small bedside cabinet produced during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. These pieces were originally built to house a chamber pot behind a single door. Over time, their compact proportions made them versatile bedside tables or lamp stands for modern interiors. They combine enclosed lower storage with flat or tray tops.

How do I spot a genuine piece?

Examine the timber construction for solid mahogany frames and period veneer techniques such as flame mahogany or flame mahogany veneer. Look for authentic ageing signs in the timber and traditional joinery methods rather than modern fixings. Check for stylistic markers like reeded legs, architectural column designs, or ebony and boxwood inlay typical of the Regency and Georgian eras.

Were these cabinets made as pairs?

Cabinet makers produced both single bedside cupboards and matched pairs for dual bed placement. Surviving pairs often show consistent timber grain and matching hardware. Single pieces appear frequently due to the separation of sets over centuries of domestic use. Both individual cabinets and pairs serve effectively as bedside storage.

What materials were used?

Mahogany serves as the primary wood across these listings, supplemented by flame mahogany and general timber framing. Detail work incorporates boxwood, ebony inlay, and brass hardware. Certain pieces feature marble tops or faux marble cylinder stands. Ceramic components also appear within the internal storage spaces.
