What is a regency mahogany high chair?

It is a nineteenth-century child's seat raised on a stand or frame, constructed from mahogany timber during the Regency or Georgian periods. These pieces adapted adult furniture styles for domestic nursery use, often featuring turned supports and upholstered elements.

How were convertible high chairs used?

They served as elevated seating for infants at the table, with many designs separating into a standalone chair and a low table base. This dual functionality provided extended utility as the child grew out of the elevated seating phase.

How do I identify Regency period furniture?

Look for classical proportions, mahogany construction, and restrained decorative elements inspired by antiquity. The era spans roughly from eighteen hundred to eighteen thirty. Details such as reeded legs and brass mounts often indicate the refined taste of the Regency workshop.

What upholstery materials are authentic?

Period pieces frequently utilise leather, horsehair padding, calico, damask, or velvet secured over webbing and hessian foundations. Surviving early textiles offer insight into the original decorative scheme. Many pieces have been recovered over time to ensure structural integrity and usable condition.
