How do I date a walnut chest?

Examine the secondary timbers inside the drawers, such as oak or pine, alongside the construction methods used for the drawer sides and backboards. Hardware impressions, dovetail tightness, and the presence of hand-cut joints help separate eighteenth-century originals from twentieth-century revival pieces.

What is a chest on stand?

A chest on stand combines an upper drawer section with a separate, elevated base frame supported by legs. This configuration lifts the storage compartment off the floor. Such pieces offer a lighter aesthetic than full-height floor chests while providing accessible compartmentalised storage.

Where should I place a tallboy?

A tallboy requires a wall space with sufficient vertical clearance to accommodate its stacked drawer configuration without dominating the room's proportions. Because these pieces offer substantial storage within a compact footprint, they function effectively in bedrooms and hallways.

How do I care for walnut veneer?

Keep walnut furniture away from direct sunlight and steady heat sources to prevent the underlying veneer from drying or lifting. Apply a traditional wax polish occasionally to nourish the timber and maintain a soft, protective sheen across the figured surfaces.
