How do I choose the right size lamp for a bedside table?

Consider the scale of the ceramic body relative to the surface area of your table. Ensure the overall height allows comfortable reach to the switch without dominating the furniture. Proportion remains key when balancing the lamp with surrounding bedroom furnishings and headboard heights.

Are these lamps wired for modern electrical standards?

Most antique lamps have been rewired at various points in their history to meet domestic safety requirements. It is standard practice to inspect the flex and plug upon acquisition. Consult a qualified electrician if you need to adapt older brass fittings or European plug types for your local sockets.

How do I clean antique porcelain and ormolu mounts?

Dust the ceramic body gently with a dry, soft cloth to prevent accumulation in textured glazes or painted crevices. Avoid abrasive cleaners that might damage delicate enamels. Treat gilt bronze mounts with equal care, using non-chemical methods to preserve the original metal patina without stripping the gold finish.

Can I replace the lampshades on these pieces?

Original shades rarely survive intact, so many pieces feature later handmade fabric or silk replacements that complement the period aesthetic. You can update shades to suit your interior design scheme. Pay attention to the fitting type, such as shade carriers or spider fitters, to ensure secure attachment to the lamp hardware.
