How do I assemble a knockdown wardrobe?

Knockdown wardrobes utilise integrated wooden or metal fixings that secure the main panels, cornices, and base drawers together without permanent glue. The side panels typically slot into the base and lock into the top cornice. Having an extra pair of hands helps align the heavy pine sides before securing the backboards and hanging the heavy doors onto their iron or brass hinges.

Should I paint or wax my pine wardrobe?

Many Victorian and Edwardian pieces arrive ready for finishing, allowing owners to match their interior decor. Applying clear wax preserves the natural grain and knot patterns of the softwood over time. Alternatively, applying a primer and heritage paint colour suits pieces that have lost their original surface or function best in modern bedroom settings.

How do I care for antique pine furniture?

Maintain pine wardrobes by keeping them away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations, which can cause the softwood panels to warp or split. Dust regularly with a dry cloth and reapply natural beeswax periodically to nourish the wood. Avoid using silicone-based polishes that build up a sticky residue on the surface and attract dust into the natural grain of the timber.
