Where should I hang a pair?

These pieces work best flanking a fireplace, framing a doorway or positioned symmetrically above matching console tables. Their dual nature creates balance and doubles the reflected light in a room. Placement height depends on the presence of integrated display brackets or candle sconces. Lower positioning allows functional use of shelves, while standard hanging centres the glass at eye level.

How do I spot a reproduction?

Examine the construction of the frame joints, the composition of the gesso, and the backboards for signs of age appropriate to the nineteenth century. Modern resin copies often lack the hand-tooled crispness and weight of period pieces. Original glass frequently exhibits subtle distortions, tiny bubbles or foxing within the silvering. Fresh, flawless glass combined with overly uniform synthetic gold paint usually points to a later style imitation.

What is a girandole mirror?

A girandole is a wall mirror fitted with one or more candle arms branching out from the frame. The polished metal and glass surfaces reflect the candlelight to brighten dark Victorian interiors. These functional pieces often take round or oval forms with ornate giltwood or brass frames. They served both as primary light sources and decorative focal points in principal rooms.

How do I clean antique glass?

Dust the frame and glass gently with a dry, soft cloth to remove surface particles without disturbing fragile gilt surfaces. Avoid commercial liquid cleaners that can seep behind the glass and damage aged silvering. Apply mild, non-ammonia cleaning solutions sparingly to a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror surface. Take care to keep moisture away from wooden edges and original backing boards.
