How were pair Georgian wall mirrors used?

These mirrors typically hung above mantlepieces, side tables, or between windows to bounce natural light around dimly lit rooms. Placing matching pieces symmetrically created a sense of proportion and formal balance in Georgian interiors. In bedrooms and dressing areas, smaller variations functioned as valet or dressing mirrors. Their reflective surfaces assisted with grooming while adding ornamental weight to the wall.

How do I distinguish 18th century from revival periods?

Original 18th century pieces exhibit timber shrinkage, hand-beveled glass variations, and historical tool marks beneath the gesso layers. The wear patterns on the gilding and backing boards generally show genuine age rather than simulated distress. Revival pieces, such as those from the late 19th or early 20th century, often use machine-sawn timber and more uniform glass plates. Stylistic clues also help, as revival makers sometimes blended Georgian motifs with Victorian proportions.

What is the difference between girandole and pier mirrors?

Girandole mirrors feature integrated candle arms or sconces extending from the frame, designed to hold candles and amplify their illumination. They typically have round or oval convex shapes that capture a wide field of view. Pier mirrors are taller and narrower, specifically proportioned to fit the masonry pier between two windows. They relied on daylight rather than built-in candle sconces to brighten the room.

How should I hang heavy antique mirrors?

Weight distribution requires securing the mirror directly into wall studs using heavy-duty brackets or traditional mirror chains rated for the load. Professional art installation ensures the frame is properly supported without straining the historical joints. Avoid hanging giltwood mirrors in areas with high humidity or direct sunlight, as environmental shifts affect the underlying gesso and wood.
