How were pair antique brass mirrors used?

These matching mirrors typically hung on opposite sides of a fireplace, window, or doorway to balance a room and distribute reflected daylight. When fitted with candle arms, they served a practical lighting function during evening hours. Over time, their placement shifted from purely functional illumination to decorative symmetry in parlours, hallways, and formal reception rooms.

How do I hang heavy brass wall mirrors safely?

Due to the combined weight of cast brass frames and glass, secure wall fixings into solid masonry or wall studs are necessary. Picture wire must match the rated weight capacity of the individual piece. Professional mirror hangers often utilise heavy-duty brass brackets or mirror plates screwed directly to the frame backing for maximum stability.

How do I clean antique brass and mirror glass?

Dust brass frames gently with a soft dry cloth, avoiding abrasive metal cleaners that strip historical patina and gilding. Mirror glass requires a mild glass cleaner applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the frame. Care must be taken around older mercury silvering and wooden backings to prevent moisture damage.

How can I tell Victorian mirrors from earlier periods?

Victorian pieces often display heavier cast brass work and machine-bevelled glass, reflecting industrial manufacturing shifts of the nineteenth century. Earlier Regency and George IV examples frequently incorporate fine timber veneers like rosewood alongside the metal. Stylistic cues such as heavy Rococo Revival scrolling or Neoclassical symmetry help point toward specific decades.
