A tallboy is a vertical storage unit combining multiple drawers in a single tall frame or across two stacked sections. This format provides maximum storage while occupying a minimal floor footprint. Historically, these pieces housed clothing and valuable textiles in domestic bedchambers. Their elevated height made them central furniture items in period bedrooms.

How do I care for painted wood?

Protect painted surfaces from direct sunlight and excessive humidity to prevent the historic pigment from fading or flaking. Dust gently with a dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners. Original paint finishes require a delicate touch to preserve their historical patina. Wax can be applied sparingly to unpainted timber elements while leaving fragile paint untouched.

Were tallboys made in parts?

Many tall examples and chests on chests were constructed in two distinct sections. The upper unit rests securely upon the lower base without permanent fixings. This modular design allowed nineteenth-century households to transport heavy furniture up narrow staircases. It remains a practical feature for modern home placement.

What is original paint?

Original paint refers to the earliest decorative coating applied to the timber when the piece was first manufactured. Finding pieces with this finish intact is prized by collectors. Over decades, original paint develops a soft crazing and wear pattern that later decorative coats cannot replicate. It provides direct evidence of the object's age and history.
