What is the difference between a dresser base and a full dresser?

A dresser base consists solely of the lower cupboard or drawer section with a flat top, whereas a full dresser includes shelving plate racks mounted on top. Historically, the base functioned as a work surface for food preparation while the upper rack displayed ceramics.

How were painted dresser bases used in historic homes?

These pieces served as heavy-duty work tables and storage hubs in kitchens, dairies, and sculleries. They held cooking implements, dry stores, and tableware while providing a sturdy surface for kneading dough or preparing meals.

How do I care for original paint on antique furniture?

Original painted surfaces require gentle dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and protection from direct sunlight and moisture. Avoid modern chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that can lift historic pigment layers from the pine or oak underneath.

How can I tell an eighteenth-century base from a nineteenth-century one?

Eighteenth-century examples often display hand-cut joinery, pegged framing, and deeper patination on oak or early pine timbers. Nineteenth-century pieces tend to feature more standardised machine-sawn components and are frequently constructed from softer pine with different drawer construction.
