How do I clean an oil painting?

Dust accumulation should be gently removed using a very soft, dry brush without applying pressure to the canvas surface. Water and chemical cleaning agents must be avoided entirely, as they damage the historic oil pigment beneath.

Can I reframe these antique canvases?

Retaining the original frame is generally advised because it preserves the historic context and aesthetic intended for the artwork. Changing a frame requires careful matching of the period style and scale to ensure the canvas remains secure.

How do I identify the period of a work?

Dating relies upon stylistic clues, artist signatures, and the physical construction of the canvas stretcher and wooden frame. Written inscriptions on the reverse of the canvas or stretcher often record dates, titles, and previous collections.

Where should I hang these paintings?

Displaying works away from direct sunlight and damp environments protects the organic canvas and oil pigments from degradation. Stable indoor temperatures prevent the wooden stretcher frames from warping and tensioning the fabric incorrectly.
