How does a tantalus lock work?

A vertical metal bar secures the stoppers of the decanters so they cannot be removed from the frame. Turning a key in the built in lock allows the bar to slide or swing open. This clever design meant hosts could leave the decanters out on a sideboard without worrying about servants or guests helping themselves to the whisky.

Why are games included with some sets?

Victorian and Edwardian hosts often combined after dinner drinking with parlour games in the drawing room or study.
