How does a tantalus lock work?

A vertical metal bar secures the stoppers of the decanters so they cannot be removed from the frame. Turning a key in the built in lock allows the bar to slide or swing open. This clever design meant hosts could leave the decanters out on a sideboard without worrying about servants or guests helping themselves to the whisky.

Why are games included with some sets?

Victorian and Edwardian hosts often combined after dinner drinking with parlour games in the drawing room or study. Building the games compendium into the base of the tantalus kept everything needed for an evening in one place. These combined boxes housed playing cards, counters, and sometimes board game components directly beneath the locking spirit bottles.

How do I date an oak tantalus?

Dating relies on the hardware style, the type of oak finish, and construction details like dovetailing on the box. Late Victorian pieces from the 1880s and 1890s often feature rich golden oak and substantial brass mounts. Edwardian examples from around 1900 can be slightly lighter in build, while 1930s versions show simpler lines without the heavy ornamentation of the nineteenth century.

Are the decanters original to the set?

Many decanters match the cut glass patterns and neck sizes intended by the original cabinetmaker. Because glass was fragile, replacement decanters of the correct period are sometimes paired with older oak frames. Checking that all three bottles sit comfortably in the dividers and share identical crystal cutting helps confirm their period match.
