What is a partners desk?

A partners desk is built to be used from both sides simultaneously, featuring matching drawers and cupboards facing outwards in opposite directions. These grand pieces were traditionally used by business partners or banking associates who needed shared workspace. They require significant floor space because they are designed to float in the middle of a room rather than sit against a wall.

How do I care for a leather desk top?

The inset leather surfaces on these desks benefit from gentle cleaning with a damp cloth and occasional treatment with appropriate leather balms to prevent cracking. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners that can strip the original colour and tooling. Keep the leather away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and drying out over time.

Are swivel chairs original to these desks?

Swivel chairs from the Victorian and Edwardian periods frequently accompany these desks, often constructed from bentwood and fitted with leather seats. While many are contemporaneous with the desks, they were often manufactured separately as office seating. Matching the timber tone and period style ensures a cohesive look when pairing a chair with a pedestal desk.

How do I distinguish Victorian from Art Deco desks?

Victorian examples lean towards heavy proportions, dark oak, raised panels, and hand carved details like lions' heads or Jacobean motifs. They prioritise traditional craftsmanship and substantial storage. Art Deco desks from the 1930s favour clean geometric lines, smooth surfaces, and modern symmetry, occasionally incorporating chrome or contrasting veneers instead of heavy carving.
