Are marble top chests heavy?

The integrated marble slabs add considerable weight to commodes and bedside cabinets, making them stable freestanding furniture. When moving these pieces, lift the marble separately if loose to prevent cracking the stone or straining the mahogany frame. Most continental commodes rely on the sheer weight of the marble to hold the slab steady atop the wooden carcase without permanent fixings.

What is the difference between Georgian and Empire styles?

Georgian neoclassical chests lean towards architectural restraint, featuring straight bracket feet, delicate boxwood stringing, and subtle bracket or chest-on-chest proportions. They reflect British interpretations of classical order. Empire pieces adopt heavier French influences, displaying bold column pilasters, prominent ormolu mounts, and figurative mahogany veneers. These items command more visual presence in a room.

Can I use a commode as a bedside table?

Compact commodes and bedside cabinets provide practical surface space and enclosed drawer storage next to a bed. Their classical proportions fit well alongside standard bed heights while offering a decorative focal point. Check the dimensions of the specific chest to ensure the drawer pulls clear any surrounding bedroom furniture or bedding.
