How do I clean mother of pearl inlay?

Use a soft, dry cloth to remove dust from the surface of the item. Avoid chemical cleaning products or excessive moisture, which can loosen old adhesives. If the piece requires deeper attention, a damp cloth with mild soap can be applied sparingly, followed immediately by thorough drying.

Are these items purely decorative?

Many pieces served practical daily functions despite their ornate appearance. Side tables, chairs, chests and sewing boxes were built for regular use in period homes. Smaller items like gaming counters, letter openers and hand mirrors were handled constantly, proving their robust construction.

How can I date a Syrian inlaid table?

Examine the timber base and the construction methods used on the underside or interior. Nineteenth-century examples often exhibit hand-sawn framing and natural resin adhesives. Look at the consistency of the mother of pearl pieces and the complexity of the geometric patterns, as twentieth-century pieces sometimes display simplified layouts.

What is the difference between Japanese and Middle Eastern inlay?

Japanese work, particularly from the Meiji period, often depicts natural scenes with pictorial subjects like birds and flowers using shibayama techniques. The shell is shaped into specific organic forms rather than geometric tiles. Middle Eastern and Damascus pieces favour repeating geometric lattices, star motifs and architectural scrollwork, building intricate patterns from countless small fragments.
