What is a partner desk?

A partners desk is a large double-sided writing table built to accommodate two people sitting opposite each other. These substantial pieces typically feature matching banks of drawers on both sides. They were originally designed for offices or libraries where colleagues or business partners needed shared workspace without sacrificing individual storage.

How do I identify a Davenport desk?

A Davenport desk is a compact form recognisable by its sloping, leather-lined writing surface that lifts to reveal stationery compartments. A bank of functional drawers is positioned on one side while dummy drawers balance the other. This clever configuration maximises storage within a remarkably small footprint, making it suitable for drawing rooms and smaller studies.

What timbers were used for these desks?

Makers relied heavily on dense hardwoods, with mahogany being the predominant choice for its rich coloration and strength. Walnut, oak, elm, and exotic veneers such as amboyna and rosewood also appear frequently. These materials were selected both for their durability under daily use and for their striking grain patterns when polished.

How should I care for a leather writing surface?

Leather inserts require gentle maintenance using specialised leather balms to prevent drying and cracking over time. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners or excess water during routine dusting. Keeping the leather conditioned preserves its supple texture and maintains the distinct character of the writing surface.
