What is a marquetry planter table?

A marquetry planter table is a nineteenth century hybrid furniture piece that functions as an occasional side table while housing a built in compartment for plants or wine. These tables combine decorative wood veneers with practical metal liners. Cabinetmakers produced them in various revival styles, incorporating brass mounts and detailed inlay to suit formal Victorian and French interiors.

How were these tables originally used?

These tables brought horticulture into the Victorian drawing room by allowing potted plants to sit atop a decorative stand. The inner metal or lead lining protected the surrounding wood from water damage. Owners also utilised the compartment as a wine cooler or cellarette during entertaining, using the lift off lid to conceal the contents when not dining.

How do I care for a wood planter table?

Protect the polished wood surfaces by removing the metal interior liner whenever watering plants to prevent overflow or condensation. Wipe the timber dry immediately and maintain a stable room humidity. Apply a traditional wax polish occasionally to nourish the walnut, kingwood, or rosewood veneers and preserve the depth of the marquetry.

How can I tell French styles from Victorian ones?

French Napoleon III and Louis XV style tables often employ kingwood or rosewood veneers paired with heavy, ornate ormolu mounts and curved cabriole legs. Victorian examples frequently utilise burr walnut with straight or turned supports and more restrained inlay. Both traditions rely on precise marquetry, but the overall silhouette and choice of metal mounts usually indicate the workshop origin.
