What is a mahogany vanity stand used for?

These pieces served practical daily grooming needs, providing dedicated spaces for washing, shaving, and dressing. Washstands held basins and water pitchers, while shaving stands incorporated adjustable mirrors and specialised trays for grooming implements.

How do I date a mahogany vanity stand?

Dating relies on observing structural characteristics, timber choices, and hardware styles associated with specific design periods. Georgian pieces often display cleaner lines and simpler joinery, whereas Victorian and Edwardian examples frequently introduce marble tops and mechanical brass fittings.

Are shaving stands adjustable?

Many shaving stands feature telescopic columns or pivoting mirror frames designed to alter height and angle. These mechanical elements allowed users to customize the glass position for optimal lighting and personal use during morning routines.

What materials are used in these pieces?

Mahogany serves as the primary timber across the category, occasionally paired with satinwood accents or boxwood inlay. Additional materials include marble for washstand surfaces, ceramic for wash basins, brass for hardware, and mirror glass.
