What is a mahogany canterbury used for?

A canterbury serves as a compartmented stand designed to store sheet music, books, or newspapers within reach of a seating area. Most examples include dividers and a low drawer, allowing owners to keep periodicals organised while retaining mobility via their castors.

How do I date a mahogany stand?

Dating relies on observing structural characteristics, timber selection, inlay styles, and the specific design of the brass castors. Georgian and Regency pieces display distinct joinery and carving traits compared to later Victorian or Edwardian interpretations. Comparing the secondary woods and hardware types against known period patterns helps narrow the manufacturing timeframe.

Are the castors on these stands original?

Castor originality varies across antique furniture, as rolling hardware sustained heavy friction and frequent replacements over generations of use. Inspecting the fixing pins and the wood around the socket reveals whether the brass fittings belong to the original period of manufacture. Matching patination between the leg and the metal housing often indicates an authentic pairing.

Can I use an occasional table on castors daily?

These tables function well in contemporary settings provided they encounter gentle movement and even floor surfaces. Their castors were built to ease repositioning during cleaning or entertaining rather than frequent rolling over thick thresholds.
