How do I distinguish George II from Chippendale styles?

George II revival pieces often display heavier proportions, solid splats, and rounded or cabriole legs ending in pad or ball-and-claw feet. Chippendale style framework introduces more elaborate pierced splats, subtle scrollwork, and ribbon-back motifs. Examining the carving depth and the shape of the top rail usually reveals which eighteenth-century designer inspired the later maker.

Where were double chair settees placed in historic homes?

Double chair settees and chair-back sofas were placed against drawing room walls or utilised in hallways and large bedrooms for brief seating. Their open wooden backs kept light moving through the room while providing rigid support. In modern interiors, they function well as hallway benches, bedroom end-of-bed seating, or compact settees in smaller living spaces.

How should I care for mahogany showwood frames?

Mahogany showwood frames require dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional treatment with a quality furniture wax to nourish the grain. Avoid placing antique timber furniture in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent warping and drying. Upholstery care depends on the textile used, requiring gentle vacuuming for damask and brocade or professional cleaning for delicate velvet surfaces.

Are these settees comfortable for daily lounging?

Chair-back settees were originally designed for upright posture during social calls and formal gatherings rather than deep lounging. Many examples feature firm sprung bases or traditional stuffed pads rather than plush cushions. Upholstered versions with deep pile brocade offer a softer sit, but most retain the supportive, upright geometry typical of antique salon seating.
