What is a coal purdonium?

A coal purdonium is a Victorian or Edwardian piece of fireside furniture designed to store coal neatly inside a wooden cabinet. Unlike an open metal bucket, a purdonium conceals the fuel behind a door or drop-front lid, often incorporating a metal liner and a matching scoop.

How do I date a mahogany coal box?

Dating relies on stylistic clues, timber choice, and construction methods characteristic of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Victorian pieces often show heavier proportions or Rococo Revival motifs, while Edwardian examples frequently feature delicate marquetry inlay. Hardware such as brass handles and the presence of original zinc liners also help narrow down the period of manufacture.

Can these be used as log stores?

Many of these containers function perfectly well for storing logs or kindling beside a modern hearth. The internal metal liners originally intended for coal accommodate wood just as easily, provided the dimensions suit the logs. Their decorative appearance makes them suitable for general fireside storage in living rooms.

What is the difference between a coal scuttle and a purdonium?

A coal scuttle is traditionally an open bucket or hod with a swing handle, whereas a purdonium is an enclosed cabinet with a hinged or tilting front. Purdoniums are built more like pieces of fine furniture, utilising cabinetry techniques, veneers, and brass mountings to blend into domestic interiors.
