What is a partners desk?

A partners desk is a large double-sided desk built so two people can sit opposite each other with matching drawer and cupboard space. These pieces were traditionally utilised in law firms, banks, and large estate offices where colleagues shared a workspace.

How do I tell Victorian from Georgian desks?

Georgian desks generally display simpler, cleaner lines with straight pedestal fronts, whereas Victorian examples often incorporate heavier proportions, carved detailing, and rich flame mahogany veneers. Revival pieces from the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries frequently blend Georgian proportions with Victorian construction methods.

Are the leather tops original?

Many desks retain their original leather inserts, though centuries of use often required surfaces to be replaced with new tooled leather matching the period style. Examining the edges and the degree of wear helps determine whether the leather has aged naturally alongside the mahogany timber.

How do I care for mahogany?

Mahogany benefits from occasional waxing using traditional beeswax and soft cloths to nourish the grain and maintain a natural sheen. Keep these heavy pieces away from direct sunlight and excessive heat sources to prevent timber movement and fading of the polished finish.
