Lacquered Floor Standing Lamp
A lacquered floor standing lamp brings height and painted detail to a room, offering tall illumination framed in Chinoiserie ornament.
Lacquered Floor Standing Lamp
A lacquered floor standing lamp provides vertical light while carrying painted decoration along a tall wooden column. When you search for a lacquered floor standing lamp, you encounter tall standard lamps dressed in Chinoiserie motifs, ranging from Edwardian examples to pieces from the 1920s and 1930s.
The standard lamps and floor lamps recorded here span the Victorian era through the early twentieth century, with Edwardian Chinoiserie standing out as a frequent discovery. These tall fittings stand upon weighted or timber bases, designed to cast light from an elevated position beside seating or in a corner.
Makers and makers' marks rarely appear in the titles, leaving the visual weight of the lacquer and the painted scenes to define each piece. Black lacquer and red lacquer provide the primary background tones for gilt and painted Oriental scenes across the surviving selection.
How they were made
The construction relies on turned wood shaped into tall standards, then finished with layers of lacquer in black or red. Gilt and paint are applied by hand to build up the Chinoiserie scenes that wrap around the vertical shaft.
Brass fittings and fabric shades complete the structural and functional composition of the lamps. Painted wood and lacquered wood form the core body, supported by traditional joinery suited to tall upright furniture.

What varies in quality

Lacquered Floor Standing Lamp: Frequently Asked Questions
What is a lacquered floor standing lamp?
A lacquered floor standing lamp is a tall interior lighting fixture made of wood finished with glossy lacquer and painted Chinoiserie decoration. These pieces rise from a floor base to support a shade at height.
They serve as both functional illumination and decorative vertical elements within a room, combining traditional woodworking with painted Oriental scenes.
How do I date an Edwardian standard lamp?
Dating relies on stylistic markers within the Chinoiserie painted decoration and the turned form of the wooden standard. Edwardian pieces often combine black or red lacquer with delicate gilt detailing.
Comparing the turned wood profile and the specific palette of the painted scenes helps distinguish early twentieth-century examples from Victorian or later works.
Where should I place a standard lamp?
These tall lamps suit corners, beside large armchairs, or near sofas where their elevated height can distribute ambient light downward. Their decorative lacquer and painted scenes make them focal points even when unlit.
Ensure the floor base has a stable surface and that the height of the standard complements the proportions of the surrounding furniture.
What is the difference between floor lamps and standard lamps?
The terms are generally interchangeable in older British usage, both referring to tall lamps that stand directly on the floor. Standard lamp is the traditional term often found in older descriptions.
Both categories describe upright wooden or metal pillars designed to carry a shade well above table height.
