What is a kneehole desk with cabinet?

A kneehole desk with cabinet is a combined furniture form that unites a lower writing table with a recessed central space and an upper storage bookcase or cabinet. These pieces provide both a surface for correspondence and enclosed shelving for books or papers within a single footprint.

How do I date an antique desk?

Dating involves examining the timber species, construction methods, and stylistic influences present in the piece, such as Georgian or Arts and Crafts details. Periods represented on this page range from the eighteenth century through the Victorian, Edwardian, and early twentieth century eras.

What materials are used in these desks?

Construction relies predominantly on hardwoods including mahogany, oak, walnut, and rosewood, paired with brass fittings and glass panels. Different periods favoured specific timbers, with eighteenth-century pieces often featuring mahogany or rosewood and later Victorian items incorporating mixed woods.

Where should I place a bureau bookcase?

A bureau bookcase suits a study, library, or living room where its dual function as a desk and display cabinet can be utilised. Ensure adequate clearance in front of the piece for sitting at the kneehole and opening any lower drawers or fold-down writing surfaces.
