What are Staffordshire flatback figures?

Staffordshire flatback figures are sculptural ceramics produced primarily during the Victorian era for display on mantelpieces. They feature detailed decoration to the front while leaving the reverse flat and unglazed. Potters created these pieces to depict royalty, literary characters, animals, and contemporary events. They provided affordable household ornamentation for the nineteenth-century middle class.

How do I identify pearlware?

Pearlware is identified by its fine earthenware body and a characteristic pale blue glaze pooling in crevices. It bridges the transition between earlier creamware and later white earthenware. Introduced in the late eighteenth century, this ceramic body was frequently hand painted with oriental or floral motifs in blue, green, and orange enamels.

Were Staffordshire dogs made as pairs?

Staffordshire spaniels and other animal figures were almost universally produced and sold as mirror-image pairs. They sat facing one another at either end of a fireplace mantel. Single surviving dogs are common due to accidental breakage over the decades. Finding an intact pair remains a primary goal for collectors of these animals.

A frog mug is a drinking vessel featuring a small ceramic frog modelled inside the base or clinging to the rim. It served as a drinking prank or novelty item in taverns. As the drinker finished their beverage, the hidden frog would suddenly appear, surprising the consumer. These mugs often bore hand-painted inscriptions or dates.
