How do I date a hand painted rose vase?

Dating relies on examining the factory marks, base signatures and stylistic nuances present on the porcelain body. European pieces often use registration numbers or impressed stamps, whilst Chinese items may bear reign marks or period characters. The overall form and mounting style also provide chronological clues. Nineteenth-century examples frequently feature heavier ormolu mounts and distinct enamel palettes compared to twentieth-century productions.

Are these vases suitable for holding water?

Whilst these vessels were originally engineered to hold floral arrangements, antique and vintage porcelain is best kept dry today. Thermal shock or lingering moisture can compromise fragile historical glazes and old interior repairs. Enjoy them as standalone decorative objects or display them unwatered. Should you wish to use them for fresh stems, employ a discreet internal glass liner to protect the ceramic body.

What is the difference between Canton and Famille Rose?

Famille Rose refers broadly to the pink enamel colour palette utilised across Chinese porcelain from the Qing dynasty onwards. Canton porcelain is a specific regional export ware that frequently incorporates this exact Famille Rose palette alongside crowded panel scenes. In essence, all Canton export rose porcelain utilises Famille Rose enamels, but not all Famille Rose ceramics originate from Canton. Look for panel arrangements of birds and court figures to identify the Canton style.
