What is hand painted chinoiserie furniture?

Hand painted chinoiserie furniture consists of wooden cabinets, tables, and chests decorated with European or Asian interpretations of traditional Chinese motifs. These items typically feature lacquered surfaces embellished with gold leaf or painted scenes. They range from nineteenth century export pieces to twentieth century English and continental revivals. The category includes diverse forms such as cocktail cabinets, marriage chests, and bedside tables.

How do I care for lacquered furniture?

Lacquered surfaces require gentle cleaning with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust without scratching the finish. Avoid placing these items in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent cracking. Wax polish is generally unnecessary on modern lacquer and may damage antique finishes. Maintain stable indoor humidity levels to preserve both the wooden structure and the painted decoration.

How do I date an antique cabinet?

Dating relies on examining the underlying construction techniques, timber types, and hardware fixings used in the piece. Styles often align with specific periods like the Victorian, Edwardian, or Art Deco eras. Makers incorporated period-specific design elements, such as faux bamboo framing or specific lacquer colours like pale cream or bright red. Comparing structural joints and decorative motifs helps narrow down the decade of manufacture.

Where should I place these pieces?

These decorative items function well as focal points in living rooms, hallways, or bedrooms. Side cabinets and chests provide practical storage while adding colour and pattern to an interior. Smaller items like occasional tables or plant stands fit easily into corners or beside seating. Their bold finishes contrast effectively with neutral wall colours and contemporary decor.
