How should I clean a gilt frame?

Dust the surface gently with a very soft, dry brush to remove particles without disturbing the delicate metallic leaf. Avoid liquid cleaners or chemical agents entirely, as moisture strips historical gilding from its gesso base. Consult a professional restorer if the frame shows signs of flaking or active detachment. Proper environmental control prevents further degradation of the wooden substrate and surface finish.

Can I hang these artworks in direct sunlight?

Direct sunlight damages both historical pigments and the binders within oil paintings, leading to fading and chemical alteration over time. Ultraviolet rays also accelerate the drying and cracking of old canvas supports and varnishes. Position pieces away from windows or utilise specialist UV-filtering glass for framing. Stable indoor temperatures prevent the wood and canvas from expanding and contracting repeatedly.

How do I identify the period of a frame?

Frame styles shifted from ornate French Rococo curves to simpler Regency lines and heavy Victorian moulding. Examining the corner joints, backboards, and fastener types reveals the manufacturing era of the enclosure. Original frames often show shrinkage cracks in the gesso and corner mitres that match the age of the canvas inside. Later replacements frequently display uniform machine tooling on the reverse timber.

What does attribution mean on a listing?

Attribution indicates that an expert has linked an unsigned or undocumented painting to a specific artist based on style, technique, and comparison. Terms like circle of or follower of denote work produced in proximity to a master. This classification provides historical context when a direct signature is missing from the canvas. It relies on stylistic traits shared with documented pieces from the same period.
