How do I clean a gold framed canvas painting?

Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush, taking care not to press against the stretched canvas or flake the delicate gilding on the frame. Avoid chemical solvents and water entirely. Professional conservators should handle deeper cleaning of the oil paint layer and the restoration of aged varnish. Regular dusting prevents particulate accumulation without risking damage to the pigment.

Are these paintings original or reproductions?

The listings comprise authentic period oil paintings created across the seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Each piece utilises traditional materials appropriate to its stated era. Some works are period copies after famous masters, which held a specific art-historical and educational role in past centuries. Documentation in the title usually denotes whether a work is an original composition or after another artist.

How should I hang a heavy giltwood frame?

Secure heavy frames directly into wall studs using appropriate steel picture hooks or brackets rated for the total weight of the timber and canvas. Avoid relying solely on plaster anchors. Ensure the hanging wire or rings on the reverse of the frame are robust and professionally secured. Correct weight distribution prevents warping of the wooden stretcher and frame mitres over time.

What lighting suits an oil painting?

Position paintings away from direct sunlight to prevent ultraviolet degradation of the oil pigments and the drying of the canvas. Low-heat LED picture lights mounted above the frame provide controlled illumination. Keep the room at a stable relative humidity and temperature to protect both the wood of the frame and the canvas support from expansion and contraction.
