Where did people place giltwood lounge chairs?

These chairs were designed for principal reception rooms, drawing rooms, and formal salons in large townhouses and chateaux. They served both as functional seating for guests and as visual markers of wealth and taste. In modern interiors, they function well as statement pieces in living rooms or studies, providing a striking contrast against contemporary or traditional backgrounds.

How do I distinguish Louis XVI style from earlier revivals?

Louis XVI style pieces typically display straight, fluted legs and geometric or oval backrests reflecting classical antiquity. Earlier Rococo revival pieces favour asymmetrical scrolling, C-scrolls, and more exuberant, curved floral carvings. Examining the structural lines of the wooden frame provides the clearest indication of which classical French period inspired the maker.

Are these chairs comfortable for daily use?

Many of these pieces were built for formal entertaining rather than casual lounging, featuring upright backs and firm upholstery. However, bergere chairs and larger armchairs offer deep seats designed for relaxed posture. Modern comfort often depends on whether the internal webbing and padding have been traditionally restored using supportive natural materials.

How should I care for giltwood frames?

Giltwood surfaces require gentle treatment to preserve the delicate gold leaf layer. Dusting should be performed softly with a dry, lint-free cloth without applying chemical polishes or water. Keeping the chairs away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity prevents the gesso foundation beneath the gold leaf from cracking or lifting.
