How are these lamps wired?

Most antique lamps are rewired with modern flex and plugs to meet contemporary safety standards while retaining their original brass components. Rewiring is typically done through the existing central channel of the urn to avoid altering the historic metalwork or stone body.

What shades suit these urns?

Simple pleated silk or fabric shades in neutral tones complement the ornate gilding without competing with the patterned ceramic or marble body. Proportion is key, ensuring the diameter of the shade matches the visual weight of the heavy stone base below.

Are the vases drilled?

Many urns and vases were drilled during the conversion process into lamps to allow electrical cord routing through the centre. Some earlier conversions utilised side cord exits to preserve the unblemished base of the antique vessel.

How do I clean the ormolu?

Dust the gilt bronze mounts gently with a soft dry brush to remove surface particles without disturbing the underlying mercury gilding. Avoid chemical metal cleaners entirely, as abrasive liquids strip away the thin layer of historic gold finish.
