What is a bouillotte lamp?

A bouillotte lamp is a specific type of desk lighting featuring a central shaft with candle arms and an adjustable shade. They were designed for card playing and writing desks. Most period examples combine a metal basin base with a characteristic painted shade that directs light downward onto the working surface.

Are these lamps originally electric?

Most nineteenth-century pieces began as oil lamps, candlesticks, or standard candelabra. They were later wired for electricity as modern lighting demands shifted. Conversions are common across the selection and retain the original antique metalwork while incorporating modern internal wiring.

How do I identify French Empire style?

French Empire style relies heavily on classical antiquity, drawing inspiration from ancient Greece and Rome. Look for motifs such as lions paw feet, sphinxes, and precise architectural columns. Materials in these pieces typically include heavy gilt bronze and contrasting dark patinated bronze or marble.

What distinguishes ormolu from brass?

Ormolu is a gold-gilded bronze finish that produces a deep, warm metallic lustre. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc that maintains a brighter, yellower tone without gold application. Ormolu pieces generally exhibit heavier casting weights and sharper chased surface details.
