Where should I hang a pier mirror?

These mirrors work best on narrow wall spaces between windows or directly above a console table. Their original purpose was to bounce natural light further into formal rooms. Ensure the wall fixings match the substantial weight of the timber and glass frame before mounting.

How do I date an antique mirror?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, the construction of the backboards, and the style of the carving. Georgian pieces often display different joinery methods compared to Edwardian or later revivals. Look closely at the mirror glass itself, as older plates frequently show subtle distortions or foxing.

What is parcel-gilt mahogany?

Parcel-gilt mahogany refers to furniture frames where gold leaf is applied only to selected carved ornaments, such as mouldings or leaf motifs. This technique highlights the decorative details without obscuring the dark grain of the underlying wood. It was a popular method in Georgian and revival pieces to add brightness.
