Are these items genuinely from the eighteenth century?

The majority of pieces found under this heading are revival items produced during the Victorian, Edwardian, and twentieth-century periods. They adopt the classical design vocabulary of the earlier Georgian era. Assay marks and hallmarks stamped onto the metal provide the definitive date of manufacture, distinguishing true eighteenth-century works from later interpretations.

How should I clean and maintain silver items?

Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth prevents the buildup of atmospheric grime on display pieces. When polishing becomes necessary, use a dedicated silver cream applied gently with non-abrasive materials. Avoid aggressive dipping solutions that can strip away desirable patination or damage applied highlights on engraved surfaces.

What is the difference between solid silver and plated pieces?

Solid sterling silver consists of the precious metal throughout its entire structure, meeting official purity standards required for hallmarks. Silver plate involves a thin coating of silver fused over a base metal foundation. Solid pieces carry intrinsic metal value and greater durability, whereas plated items provided households with grand presentation wares at a lower cost.

How do I identify the date of a piece?

British silver typically bears a date letter punch within the array of hallmarks stamped by the assay office. Cross-referencing this specific letter shape against published assay office tables reveals the exact year of testing. Stylistic cues, such as the heavier cast mounts common in twentieth-century revivals, also offer initial clues before checking the marks.
