What is a silver gilt box used for?

These boxes served primarily to carry snuff or aromatic vinegars for personal refreshment in social settings. Owners kept them in pockets or displayed them on tables. The small compartments and fitted sponges catered to daily personal habits of the period, combining utility with portable status.

How do I identify a Georgian box?

Examination of the hallmarks stamped on the interior or rim reveals the assay office, date letter, and maker's mark. Stylistic clues include rococo chased motifs and classical figural scenes. Matching the stamped maker to historical records confirms the production era alongside the structural characteristics of the silver.

How should I clean a silver gilt box?

Harsh metal polishes must be avoided because they strip away the delicate gold layer applied to the surface. Gentle dusting with a soft cloth preserves the gilt finish. Professional care is recommended if accumulated dirt obscures the intricate chased details and hallmarks.
